Johann P. Arnason on Civilizations and Modernity

Time for part four of our series of influences upon Social Imaginaries.

Johann P. Arnason is one of our editors-at-large, and translated Castoriadis’s essay ‘The Imagination as Such’ for our first issue with an introductory essay. Another paper by Arnason is forthcoming for the next issue – stay tuned!

Arnason is an eminent thinker across various fields, bringing together social theory, philosophy, history, civilizational analysis, and hermeneutic phenomenology in his reworking of the theory of culture in the growing ‘multiple modernities’ debates. His forthcoming paper in  issue two of Social Imaginaries centres precisely on the debates of civilizational analysis, specifically on the key voices of Norbert Elias and S.N. Eisenstadt.  In this video, Arnason discusses these themes in relation to global history, Axial civilizations and modernity.
