Fred Dallmayr on ‘Dialogue’

Part five of our series of influences upon Social Imaginaries looks at Fred Dallmayr, one of our journal’s editors-at-large, who is featuring in our upcoming second issue (forthcoming, November 2015).

Dallmayr is an eminent voice in social and political theory and philosophy. In this video, he discusses the meaning and goal of civilizational dialogue in the epoch of globalization. Dallmayr succinctly elaborates the problematic of modern science and the condition of individualism to the detriment of ‘dialogue’, where groups are able to find the slow ‘truth’ found in interactions and communication. The distance between cultures is flattened in globalization: we are no longer at a distance from each other, so we must intercommunicate across cultures. These debates are key to the journal.
